Bread comprises scans of slices of Warburtons Thick Sliced White Bread, one of the most widely purchased and circulated loaves in the UK. The work explores the tension between standardisation and difference within mass-produced objects. Each slice bears the marks of industrial production: the bread tin, cutting process and systems of manufacture that shape its form. Yet each slice also contains unique organic variations, textures and structures that resist complete uniformity.
Originally produced as scans, the bread was enlarged and exhibited as A1 Xerox photocopies. Processes associated with preservation and enlargement sit alongside methods associated with reproduction, circulation and disposability. Through scaling the images beyond their everyday dimensions, details that would ordinarily pass unnoticed become visible, encouraging close observation of a familiar object.
The work reflects on how value is assigned to things that are routinely consumed and discarded. In doing so, Bread asks viewers to reconsider the material, social and cultural significance of an object so commonplace that it often escapes attention altogether.
