THROUGH THEIR EYES: st mungos HOUSING ASSOCIATION, 2016-17

Developed as a sustained photography programme with residents of St Mungo's Housing Association, the project supported participants to document and reflect upon their everyday lives through image-making. Supported by Fujifilm, participants used disposable cameras between workshops to create personal records of the places, routines and experiences that shaped their daily realities.

Workshops introduced a range of photographic processes, including studio portraiture, cyanotypes, alternative printing techniques and experimental photography, while encouraging participants to define their own subjects and creative direction.

A central aspect of the project was the collective consideration of audience and site. Participants expressed a strong desire for the work to be encountered within locations that were familiar and meaningful to them, including places connected to their everyday experiences and, for some, experiences of street homelessness. The resulting exhibition was presented at St Giles-in-the-Fields Church, London, selected for its proximity to the hostel, accessibility and significant public footfall. Produced through a partnership with Genesis Imaging Ltd, participants' photographs were exhibited as one-metre-square prints.
